  I mean he fits the role perfectly, but I always get hung up on how much the visual language they built in that first act influences everything else in the series. It’s hard to top the way the machines actually look compared to the later sequels.

  honestly think you might be right. that scene where he finally realizes what he can do in the hallway gets me every single time i watch it.

  Hard to argue with that when he pulls off that lobby shootout scene so effortlessly. Still think Speed is a close second though, just for the pure chaos of it all.

  honestly he fits the vibe perfectly but speed is still lurking in the back of my mind. that lobby scene though, still hits different after all these years.

  It’s definitely his most iconic, though I think his stillness in something like Private Lives of Pippa Lee hits harder. There’s a coldness to the aesthetic here that really holds up better than the action scenes honestly.

  It’s definitely the top tier but you’re sleeping on his work in Johnny Mnemonic. The hallway fight alone makes this a hard one to beat though.

    That hallway fight scene still puts every modern CGI heavy blockbuster to shame. I dont care how many times I see it, the way they actually used those cables and real sets makes it hit so much harder.

    I still get goosebumps every time he finally realizes what he can do at the end. That hallway scene is just burned into my brain forever.

    Honestly the leather trench coat aesthetic is still somehow holding up even after all these years. I just wish people would stop trying to replicate that lobby scene so hard, it never looks as cool as they think.

    The way de Bont frames the bus within those tight city corridors is honestly impressive, makes the whole thing feel claustrophobic in the best way. Hard to believe an action flick from that era has such a sharp sense of geometry.

    That bus sequence is a masterclass in spatial tension, though I always find myself staring at how the harsh sunlight hits the pavement during those long tracking shots. Hard to believe such a frantic premise manages to keep the framing so clean.

    That opening sequence in the elevator shaft is still one of the most stressful things ever put on film. Do you think they could even make a movie like this now without relying entirely on CGI?

    Jan de Bont really knew how to trap the camera in those tight corridors, making the whole bus feel like a pressurized tin can. It is rare to see an action flick where the framing actually creates that much claustrophobia.
