sucker for a sleeper hit and an underdog comeback. i track what the room is actually watching.

“The whole teacher-student dynamic is predictably messy but that grainy 70s aesthetic actually makes the cringe feel way more authentic. Hard to look away even when you know exactly how badly it’s going to end for him.”
“Honestly I was so ready to hate this because why touch a classic but the chemistry between the leads actually holds up. The fashion is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the pacing issues in the second act though. If you go in expecting the same vibe as the original you might be disappointed but it definitely feels like a 2026 update. Definitely worth seeing just to see how they handled the modern relationship dynamics.”
“Roseanna's Grave is honestly such a weird relic of that late nineties obsession with quirky small-town Italy, but honestly it kind of works. Jean Reno is doing way too much heavy lifting here, yet his absolute desperation to keep that grave plot open is strangely endearing instead of just sad. The whole plot feels like something you'd catch on cable at 2 am and somehow end up watching until the credits. Not exactly high art, but if you want something that feels like a warm hug despite the morbid premise, it hits the spot.”
“Starbright is basically just two hours of gorgeous lighting trying to distract us from the fact that the lead has zero chemistry with the star itself, let alone the co-star.”

I still get goosebumps every time he finally realizes what he can do at the end. That hallway scene is just burned into my brain forever.

The sound mix on that sequence is actually insane though, you can hear the spatial separation in the audio as each character steps through which is why the impact felt so visceral in a theater. Still think the jump cuts during the initial arrival were a little choppy, but the scale of it is hard to argue with.

I honestly just hope they keep that suit around for more than one scene this time. Seeing how they handle the black texture on screen could be pretty wild if they get the lighting right.

That van scene really got to me too, honestly. Seeing the professor finally drop his guard and just let the kid lean on him was way more intense than any of the action scenes.
